maybe I am too busy…
I, I heard a pastor say one time, if the devil can't get you to sin, he'll make you busy. That if he can't get you to fall, he'll distract you with busyness, with work. And, you know, my little Enneagram three self didn't take too kindly to that comment.
I mean, what are you insinuating? that God doesn't want me to work and work hard, make this paper, move my mom on up, take care of my family, my kids, my kids, kids? I mean, Jesus worked, right? Six, full days of work and then he rested.
So how was work a bad thing? I didn't think too much of it till I was reading this passage in Luke when these two sisters invite Jesus into their home. One of them is working. and the other one is sitting chilling at Jesus's feet and I ain't got front, I was with the other sister like, man, if she
don't get to work, man, don't you see how I'm putting all this work in for Jesus? Don't you see that there's work to do and you over there chillin. What would Gary Vee say about you? I'm putting in work.
Day in. Day out. No days off. Oh Martha. Martha. You are worried about many things, but few things are needed. Or indeed, only one. And Mary. She has chosen the better thing. And it will not be taken from her, and then it hit me.
If the devil can't get you to fall, he'll make you busy. And believe me when I tell you this underprivileged kid raised by a drill sergeant, always the shortest on the team, but still the team captain brotha who had a job before he had his first kiss.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know the value of a hard day's work, you ain't got to convince me. To sit here and think that I have put more stock in business and work than with being with Jesus. It's the perfect plan, right?
Why would anyone stop to rest with Jesus when they're accomplishing their own goals to their own work? What profits it a man to gain the whole world? but never rest. I'ma be honest. It's hard for me to let that go.
But just maybe. If I can't let it go. then maybe I've chosen the lesser thing.
